A NEW name for a NEW Church
During summer, on a Prayer Meeting night as I was thinking about the future, the new meeting house that was being erected, the Lord seemed to impress a name upon my heart, concerning our work and witness here in Ballymoney. If we were to give the church a name, now would be the time. The name which seemed to be imprinted upon my heart was ‘HEBRON' When I discussed the matter with the elders, they were more than happy to endorse this name for our Church; as were the deacons. I will preach on this subject, God willing, on the first Lord's Day morning after the opening of our new building.
Here is an outline of the reasons why our church will be called Hebron. This outlines all that I desire our church to be in this area.
1. Hebron was a City of Refuge: Our church is to be a place of refuge for poor lost sinners where they will come to find a haven in the only true Refuge for souls, Jesus Christ.
2. Hebron was the City where David was crowned king: David's Greater Son, King Jesus, will be crowned King in our place of worship.
3. Hebron was the City given to Caleb: Caleb wholly followed the Lord - that is what I desire every member to be; a Christian who wholly follows the Saviour.
4. The meaning of 'Hebron' is ‘UNION': This will first remind us of the union that we have in Christ, then of that blessed union which we have with one another
