Nepal Mission

The Nepal Mission to the Unreached commenced in March 2003 when a young man in Kathmandu called Paul Thapa caught the vision to take the gospel to the villages of Nepal. He and his wife sought God for direction. Within two weeks five souls came to know the Lord and this great work was launched. To date in excess of seventeen hundred have come to faith in Christ with forty churches having been established.
Each church has a pastor who is instructing the people in the Word of God, and reaching out to neighbouring villages. Most of these pastors have been converted from Hinduism or Buddhism in the last year or two. When Timothy Graham the son of the Rev Wesley Graham visited Nepal in the autumn of 2003, he came into contact with Paul and corresponence was kept up for the next two years. On returning to Nepal in November 2005, Paul made Timothy aware of the need to train the pastors. It was at this stage that the Rev. Wesley Graham became involved when he was invited to a five day teaching conference in March 2006 and then again in April 2007, to instruct the people in the fundamentals of the Christian faith. In 2007 eighty-five pastors, leaders, workers and their wives attended. It was thrilling to see their thirst for God and the desire to sit for hours under the preaching of the Word. About one hundred people in Nepal are also doing the Whitefield College Biblical Doctrine correspondence course, which has been translated into Nepali. The intention is to extend the training programme to include other subjects. It is hoped that the conference in 2008 will bring together about one hundred and fifty pastors, leaders and workers for further instruction.
At the beginning of November one of the pastors Bishal by name was arrested on false charges and his church building substantially damaged. Pastor Bishal was engaged in reaching out to villages in his area and his arrest has curtailed that activity. This clearly is an incident of persecution to attempt to put pressure on the church in that village to cease from its evangelistic efforts. We need to pray for the overall work in Nepal that the Lord would protect it from such attacks as this.
Another aspect of the work are the radio broadcasts of the “Let the Bible Speak” radio ministry. This commenced in September 2006 with one station broadcasting twice weekly in English. The broadcasts are now going out in the Nepali language and the work has so increased that from January 2008, fifteen radio stations will be sounding out the gospel message twice each week, covering ninety percent of the country with a potential audience of over twenty million people.
A further project has been the setting up of an orphanage. These children have been rescued from abject poverty and are now cared for by Paul and Mandira Thapa in a loving Christian environment. Through the generosity of some Free Presbyterian Churches we have been able to purchase a property which provides suitable accommodation for twenty of these children. It is intended that more children be taken and cared for in the near future. Please pray for wisdom as we seek to give advice and help to these people and that God would continue to increase their witness in the land of Nepal.
