Friday 13th January 2006

Friday night the 13th of January seen the first night of the 2006 missionary weekend. Like other years the building was packed to capacity with seats taking up every spare inch of space. This year there was a further reduction in space due to the meetings being held in our church hall while construction work continues on the new church building.

A great number of young people from around the province were among the congregation and this was recognized by Rev Armstrong (Antrim) who opened the meeting in a word of prayer. The presence of God was sought and he implored God that precious souls would be saved and there would be a dedication of lives to the Lord's service.

First on the agenda was a short film presentation on what life is like in Kenya at the Christian Academy . God willing in August there will be a group of over fifty young people heading out to paint some of the new buildings on campus .

This film was designed to let those who applied know what to expect once they reached Kenya . It was a great reminder to the whole congregation as to the missionary endeavour that was being carried out amongst the children and young people.

Pastor Eugene Groza brought a short missionary report on the work in Romania. Much emphasis was given on what God had done in the past 17 years. With a new vision for spreading the gospel within Romania and neighbouring countries; the work of God has gone from strength to strength. Pastor Groza acknowledged all the work; prayer and support that had been offered by the people in Northern Ireland. A challenge was also presented as to whether it was harder to die for Christ; or live for Christ and in everything we do or say we must display the characteristics of our Lord and Saviour.

After Miss Naomi Telford from Tandragee brought two solo pieces; Mr George McConnell from the mission board brought an annual report of the work throughout the year. Starting with the mission work here in Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland, he spoke about Australia, North America, India , Spain and finishing in Kenya; Mr McConnell praised God for every aspect of the work. To finish, the people were encouraged to ask for God's blessing on the mission board and missionaries for the incoming year.

To close the meeting the Chairman of the Mission Board, Dr David McIlveen (Minister of Sandown Road, Belfast) brought the message from Acts chapter 9 verses 10 – 19. Dr McIlveen looked at the contrast between certain men of God in the Bible and their name sakes who did not live a pleasing life onto the Lord. The challenge was left as to what type of men and women we are for Christ and whether we are a ‘Failure or Success' in the sight of God.
