THE ABODE OF SATAN

1. HIGH PLACES

Eph. 6:12 "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."
Job 1:6 "Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, Satan came also among them."
Gen 2:2 "The sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair, and they took them wives of all which they chose."

Sons of Seth came down from Mount Hermon where Adam was buried, to the valley where the Cainites were.  Abel was slain there.

2. SATAN GOES TO AND FRO IN THE EARTH.

Job 1:7 "And the Lord said unto Satan, whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the Lord and said, From  going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it."
1 Peter  1:8 "Be sober, be vigilant, because your adversary, the devil, as a roaring lion walketh about, seeing whom he may devour."

The earth seems to be the special field of his activity, as in the coming day, Christ and His Church, though heavenly beings, will rule an earthly kingdom, so now Satan and his hosts, heavenly beings, exercise their activity among an earthly people.

THE WORK OF SATAN

1. Satan is the author of sin in the world.

Gen3:1-6 He tempted Adam and Eve in the garden.
Rev12.9 "And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the devil and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels  were cast out with him.

Satan is the author  of sickness

Acts 10:38 "Now God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power, who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil : for God was with him."
Luke 13:16 "And ought not this women, being  a daughter of Abraham whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day."

Satan has the power of death.

Heb. 2:14 "Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood be also himself likewise took part of the same, that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is the devil."

Satan tempts men to sin.

1  Chron. 21:1 And Satan stood up against Israel and provoked David to number Israel.
v8 "And David said unto God, I have sinned greatly because I have done this thing, but now I beseech thee do away the iniquity of thy servant, for I have done very foolishly."
V11 "So God came to David and said unto him, thus saith the Lord, choose thee, Either  three years famine or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of the Lord, even the pestilence in the land, and the angel of the Lord destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel."
v13 "And David said to God, I am in a great strait.  Let me fall now into the hands of the Lord, for very great are His mercies but let me not fall into the hands of men."
v.14 "So the Lord sent pestilence upon Israel and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men."

Satan put pride in his heart.  This is the sin that caused him to be cast out of Heaven.
Mat. 4 v. 1,3,5,6,8,9 -  Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil... and when the tempter came to him he said, if thou be the Son of God command that these stones be made bread... then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, and saith unto him, if thou be the Son of God cast thyself down, for it is written, He shall give his angles charge concerning thee, and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone... again the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain and showeth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them, and saith unto him, all these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
1 Thess 3.5 - For this cause when I could no longer forbear I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you and your labour be in vain.

The Devil lays snares for men

1 Tim 3.7 Moreover he must have a good report on them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
2 Tim 2.26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

The Devil puts wicked purposes into the hearts of men

Acts 5.3 But Peter said, Ananias why hath Satan filled thin heart to keep back part of the price of the land?
John 13.2 And supper being ended; the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him.

The Devil personally enters into men.

This is, of course, by their consent or when they leave an opening.
Eph 4.27 Neither give place to the devil.
James 4.7 Submit yourselves therefore to God, resist the devil and he will flee from you.
John 13.27 And after the sop Satan entered into him.  Then said Jesus unto him that thou doest do quickly.

Satan blinds the minds of unbelievers

He distorts God's work
John 14.23 Jesus answered, and said unto him, if a man love me, h will keep my words, and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
Eph 2.2 Wherein in times past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the price of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience.
Phil 2.13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
2 Cor 4.4 In whom the God of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

It is the work of the Holy Spirit to illuminate the minds of men, especially believers, and reveal Jesus.  It is the work of Satan to blind the minds of men, especially unbelievers, so that they cannot see the glory that is in Jesus.  It is for each individual to say to the work of which he will surrender himself.
The awful, almost incredible blindness of men, who are intelligent on other subjects, to the simplest and plainest truth about Christ is due to this blinding work of Satan.

Satan takes away the Word out of the hearts of those who hear the word but do not understand.

Mark 4.15 And these are they by the wayside where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately and taketh away the word that was sown in the hearts.
Wherever the word is preached Satan is present either in person or through his agents to snatch away the seed sown.  It is needful for us to pray God to keep the guard over the seed sown.
It is also needful to hold fast to the truth we have heard, lest Satan snatch it away.
Luke 8.15 But that on good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the world keep it and bring forth the fruit with patience.
It is the work of the Spirit to bring to remembrance what Christ has spoken.
John 14.26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
It is the work of Satan to make men forget it.  The world and the flesh are quite ready to cooperate with the devil in this work.

The Devil sows tares in God's field

Mat 13.39  The enemy that sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the end of the world.
The field here is the world.  v 38 Satan mixes his children up with God's.  He does this also in the visible church.  Satan is ever busy corrupting the church and its doctrine.  He gets the woman to mix the leaven in the children's meal and the rotten stuff goes on putrefying and all is fermented.
Matt 13.33 The Kingdom of Heaven is like unto leaven which a woman took and hid in the three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.
1 Cor 5.6,7 Your glorifying is not good, know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.  Purge out therefore the old leaven that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened, for even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us.

Satan will give power to the lawless on to utterly deceive the perishing, those who receive not the love of the truth.

2 Thess 2.9-10 Even him whose coming is after the working of Satan, with all power and lying wonders, and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness, in them that perish, because they receive not the love of the truth that they might be saved.
Men can have truth or lies, whichever they prefer.  If they do God's will He will give them truth.
John 7.17 If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.
The Spirit will guide them into all the truth.

Satan has his ministers and his church to carry on his work

2 Cor 11.14-15 And no marvel, for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.  Therefore it is not great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers or righteousness, whose end shall be according to their works.
Rev 3.9 Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan which say they are Jews and are not, but do lie, behold I will make them to come and worship before they feet and to know that I have loved thee.

Satan by his messengers buffets God's servants

2 Cor 12.7 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of revelation, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.
This results in good to them.  It keeps them humble and drives them to prayer.
2 Cor 12.8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice that it might depart from me.

Satan resists the servants of God in their work

Zech 3.1 And he showed me Joshua the High Priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan at his right hand to resist him.
Dan 10.13 But the prince of the Kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days, but lo, Michael one of the chief princes came to help me, and I remained there with the King of Persia.

Satan hinders Christ's servants in their desires.

1 Thess 2.18 Wherefore we would have come unto you even I, Paul, once and again, but Satan hindered us.
But good may come of that.  This hindering of Paul going to Thessalonica gave to the saints there, and to coming generations this precious Epistle.

Satan shakes Christ's disciples up and sifts them.

Luke 22.31 And the Lord said unto him, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat.
Only good comes of this in the end.  Simon came out of Satan's sieve purer than he was before.  Satan just sifted some of the chaff out of him.
Romans 8.28 All things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose.

Satan accuses the brethren before God day and night.

Rev 12.9-10 The great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the devil and Satan which deceiveth the whole world, he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.  And I heard the Kingdom of our God and the power of his Christ, for the accuser of the brethren is cast down, which accused them before God day and night.
The Greek word for the devil - accuser, slanderer.
Job 1.6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, Satan also came among them.

The devil casts Christ's servants into prison

Rev 2.10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer, behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried, and ye shall have tribulation ten days, be thou faithful unto death, and I will give you a crown of life.
Only good comes out of that.  They are tried and purified and obtain the crown of life.
